Citizen science dashboards, data and infrastructure hosted by Pocket Science
Pocket Science builds and operates the complete data side of a citizen science observatory: researcher dashboards, project administration, validation workflows, maps, APIs, data extracts, processing and optional AI or machine learning. The participant app and research environment work as one system, and every component can be tailor-made.
A successful citizen science project can quickly become an operational data service. Contributions arrive from many devices, field conditions and participant experience levels. Researchers need controlled access, provenance, validation and exports. Participants expect their contribution to appear and remain meaningful.
We design the infrastructure with those responsibilities in mind from the beginning.

One data model, different audiences
A participant may need a clear personal result. A project coordinator needs campaign progress and support signals. A researcher needs raw values, processing versions, provenance and quality indicators. A public map may need aggregation or privacy protection.
These are different views of one governed system. Designing them together reduces later reconciliation work and prevents the public interface from becoming an accidental scientific database.
Helping shape the EOSC Citizen Science Node
Pocket Science contributes invited expert input to the Project Charter for the planned thematic EOSC Citizen Science Node. The initiative is preparing a future application for membership of the EOSC Federation. Our ambition is to help establish and contribute practical citizen-science services to one of the first nodes of its kind; this is an active development goal, not a claim of completed Federation membership.
This work connects directly to our long-term view: applications, data and communities need durable services, interoperability and stewardship beyond an individual project grant.
Interoperability and open science
Pocket Science contributed software, backend and research work to interoperable citizen-science services in Horizon 2020 COS4CLOUD and developed mobile and low-cost sensing technology in MONOCLE. That experience informs practical APIs, metadata, FAIR data workflows and European Open Science Cloud connections where they genuinely serve the project.
Interoperability is not achieved by placing “FAIR” in a proposal. It requires identifiers, semantics, provenance, licensing, access rules, documentation and operational ownership that match the real data lifecycle.
Security and privacy by default
Every production system is designed with access control, data minimisation, protected research access, updates, monitoring, backups and explicit retention responsibilities. The precise legal and ethical decisions remain with the qualified project owners; implementing those decisions securely is part of our work.
Multi-year support contracts
Support can continue under an agreed multi-year contract covering hosting, monitoring, backups, security updates, app-store releases, operating-system changes, integrations, researcher and participant support, issue triage, documentation and planned improvements. Service scope and response expectations are made explicit instead of relying on informal availability.
Hosting and maintenance
Pocket Science hosts and operates the complete platform on infrastructure under its own management, without relying on an external public-cloud platform. Scope can include application deployment, database operation, monitoring, backups, security updates and continued app-store maintenance.
Relevant work
Black Hole Finder combines public classification, project administration and research follow-up. Mini Secchi connects field observations with a global data service. COS4CLOUD work addressed interoperable citizen-science services connected with the EOSC landscape.
